Café Carlyle — the legendary nightclub on the Upper East Side — has expanded their normal cabaret schedule by adding a Late Night Series. This new policy will showcase promising artists and at the same time make the Carlyle experience more accessible and affordable for general audiences. All performances are at 10:45 PM, following the evening's main attraction, and last approximately an hour.

Among the current group is Ryan Silverman, who began his four-night engagement on Jan. 24. Silverman is the strong-voiced tenor who did such a fine job as Giorgio in last spring's production of Stephen Sondheim's Passion at the Classic Stage Company. He has also played Raoul in the Broadway and Las Vegas productions of The Phantom of the Opera, Kodaly in last summer's Caramoor production of She Loves Me, and most recently starred as Billy Flynn in the long-running Chicago at the Ambassador. Silverman was also skedded to play the Laurence Olivier role in the ill-starred Rebecca.

Silverman came in with a slate of songs influenced by Tony Bennett and Sammy Davis. He quickly warmed up the room, on an especially frigid night, with W. Franke Harling & Sam Coslow's "Sing You Sinners." This was followed by the Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer "Charade" and the Harry Warren/Al Dubin "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." Silverman gave us two late and lesser known Porter tunes, "All of You" (from Silk Stockings) and "I Am Loved" (from Out of This World). Vintage songs were balanced with some newer items, like Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" and a mix of Sting's "Moon over Bourbon Street" with Mel Tormé's "No Moon at All." Singer was at his best, perhaps, with Sondheim's "Not While I'm Around" from Sweeney Todd.

The opening night audience was populated by folk from Chicago. Bianca Marroquin, the current Roxie Hart, joined Silverman for "Moonglow" and a bit of "Bésame Mucho." Singer — accompanied by Paul Masse on piano, with Michael Bianco on bass and John Doing on drums — ended the show with Anthony Newley & Leslie Bricusse's "What Kind of Fool Am I?," DeSylva Brown & Henderson's "Birth of the Blues" and an a cappella rendition of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." Silverman reprises his act Jan 31, Feb. 7 and Feb. 14. Also appearing in the Carlyle's Late Night Series are jazz vocalist Hilary Gardner, who was a featured vocalist in Twyla Tharp's Come Fly with Me (Jan. 30, Feb. 6, Feb. 13), and singer/songwriter Kate Davis (Jan 29, Feb. 5 and Feb. 12).
