The cast of "Birdman," about an actor struggling to make a comeback on Broadway, leads the nominations with four: Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role (Michael Keaton), Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Edward Norton), Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (Emma Stone) and Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
Ensemble nominations went to the films "Boyhood," "Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game" and "The Theory of Everything."
Meryl Streep received a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her performance in "Into the Woods," the adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine musical. Nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role also include Benedict Cumberbatch for "The Imitation Game," Jake Gyllenhaal for "Nightcrawler" and Eddie Redmayne for "The Theory of Everything." Cumberbatch was also nominated for "Sherlock: His Last Vow."
Mark Ruffalo and Julia Roberts received nominations for Outstanding Performance in a Television Movie or Miniseries for "The Normal Heart," the TV movie adaptation of Larry Kramer's award-winning play.
Cicely Tyson, who won a Tony Award for her performance in Horton Foote's The Trip to Bountiful on Broadway, was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for her performance in the Lifetime movie of the same name. Viola Davis, a two-time Tony Award winner, was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her starring role in "How to Get Away With Murder."
The comedy "Modern Family" received four nominations: Julie Bowen for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series and Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
"Boardwalk Empire" received nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series and Steve Buscemi for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.
