News Salem-Set Safe in Hell Bewitches Yale Repertory Theatre, Nov. 11 The east coast premiere of Amy Freed's Safe in Hell, starring Broadway performers Graeme Malcolm and Myra Lucretia Taylor and directed by Mark Wing-Davey, begins at Yale Repertory Theatre, Nov. 11.

The new work will open at the New Haven, Connecticut company's stage Nov. 17 for a run slated through Dec. 3.

Set in 1691's Salem, the work from the pen of The Beard of Avon retells the story of real-life father and son Puritan preachers Cotton and Increase Mather. The satire delves into the story behind the witch hunt.

Graeme Malcolm — of Broadway's Aida and The King and I — will reprise his role as Increase Mather, a role he created for the world premiere production at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California in April 2004.

Myra Lucretia Taylor — seen last on Broadway in the revival of Nine — joins Malcolm in the cast which also features Katie Barrett, Chad Callaghan, Adam Dannheisser (Henry V, Proof), Sean Dougherty, Sofia Gomez, Erik Lochtefeld (But I’m a Cheerleader, Metamorphoses) as Cotton Mather, Alexis McGuinness, Jeff Steitzer and Welker White (Well).

The design team for Safe In Hell includes Leiko Fuseya (scenic), Emily Rebholz (costume), Gina Scherr (lighting), David Budries (sound) and Aleksandra Maslik (special character effects). Peter Pucci provides choreography. Director Wing-Davey — who will next direct Jose Rivera's School of Americas Off-Broadway — has also previously staged Henry V, 36 Views, The Skriker, Troilus and Cressida and Silence, Cunning, Exile at the Public Theater. The British director recently staged the musicalDirty Dancing in Sydney, Australia and Craig Lucas' Small Tragedy Off-Broadway. He is also known for his work on Caryl Churchill's Mad Forest.
