Allegiance, produced by Lorenzo Thione and Sing Out, Louise! Productions, "tells the story of a Japanese-American family during World War II and the internment years," when they were viewed as threats to national security. Music and lyrics are by Jay Kuo; the book is by Kuo and Lorenzo Thione. "Allegiance is a major musical about a forgotten part of history," Takei, who spent his childhood in an internment camp in Arkansas, said in a statement. "Kuo's music soars, and the epic story stirs deep emotions. This is a hugely important work."
The Manhattan reading is directed by Stafford Arima, with music direction and arrangements by Lynne Shankel. The cast also features Telly Leung, Kevin Gray, Allie Trimm, Michael K. Lee, Paolo Montalban, Tamlyn Tomita, Philip Hoffman, Sally Wilfert and Louis Hobson, with Adam Fleming, Gaelen Gilliland, Mary Ann Hu, Austin Ku, Daniel Levine, Kasey Marino, Doan Mackenzie and Ann Sanders.
The show had a summer 2009 reading in Los Angeles, with Takei and Salonga.
