Mendes had said in March that he decided not to direct the film due to a busy theatre schedule that includes a new production of King Lear and the new musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

On July 11, however, Mendes released a statement saying, "I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honor all my theatre commitments, the producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24. I very much look forward to taking up the reins again, and to working with Daniel Craig, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for a second time."

Mendes directed "Skyfall," the most recent James Bond film. He has won two Academy Awards ("American Beauty," "Revolutionary Road"). Additional film credits include "Road to Perdition," "Jarhead" and "Away We Go."

Mendes served as the artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse in London from 1992-2002. His Broadway credits include Cabaret, The Blue Room, Gypsy and The Vertical Hour.

The upcoming James Bond film will be written by John Logan (Red, I'll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers), who was a screenwriter of "Skyfall."
