Sam Mendes Wins South Bank Show Award in London

News   Sam Mendes Wins South Bank Show Award in London
Sam Mendes may have left the Donmar, but he's still trailing clouds of glory.

The ex-artistic director has picked up the South Bank Show Award for Best Theatre for his direction of Uncle Vanya and Twelfth Night, which ran in repertory at the Donmar last year. Given the general critical acclaim for Michael Grandage's production of The Tempest at the Old Vic, it's quite possible that Mendes' successor will be heading for an awards platform next year. Mendes' next project is the upcoming revival of the classic musical Gypsy starring Bernadette Peters. That production begins performances on Broadway March 31.
