The London transfer will open in December for a run through Jan. 16. Shepard will play Salter, the role filled by Michael Gambon in London. Peter Sarsgaard (Burn This,"Shattered Glass") will play his son. The play is about cloning and its repercussions.
"I think it's the most brilliant contemporary play since Waiting for Godot," Mr. Shepard told The New York Times about the work.
Shepard is, or course, best known in the theatre as a playwright, the author of such landmark works as True West and Buried Child.
Preceding Number will be Hedda Gabler (Sept.10-Oct. 24). Ivo van Hove—the avant garde Dutch director whose New York theatre career begins and ends at New York Theatre Workshop, where he has directed several works and attracted passionate reviews, some pro, but mostly con—returns to the company to stage the work.
The remainder of the season has not been announced.
