The New Group's revival of Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work Buried Child begins performances Feb. 2. The Off-Broadway production features "Mad Men" star Rich Sommer, Broadway vet Larry Pine (Casa Valentina) and Ed Harris ("Apollo 13").
Helmed by Scott Elliott, the cast also features "House of Cards" actor Paul Sparks, Nat Wolff (Paper Towns), Taissa Farmiga ("American Horror Story") and Amy Madigan ("Twice in a Lifetime"). An official opening night is scheduled for Feb. 17.
Following an extension announcement, the limited engagement will now play through March 27 at The Pershing Square Signature Center.
Buried Child launched Shepard to international fame following its critically acclaimed debut in 1978, moving him beyond the Off-Broadway and regional worlds where he had been produced since the 1960's. Last seen on Broadway in 1996, Buried Child follows Vince, who returns to his idyllic childhood farm with his girlfriend, only to discover emotionally and physically crippled family members and a host of secrets. The Broadway revival was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Play.
"Dodge (Harris) and Halie (Madigan) are barely hanging on to their farmland and their sanity while looking after their two wayward grown sons Tilden (Sparks) and Bradley (Sommer)," states a description of the play from the New Group. "When their grandson Vince (Wolff) arrives with his girlfriend Shelly (Farmiga), no one seems to recognize him, and confusion abounds. As Vince tries to make sense of the chaos, the rest of the family dances around a deep, dark secret. This wildly poetic and cuttingly funny take on the American family drama gleefully pulls apart the threadbare deluded visions of our families and our homes." Pine plays Father Dewis.
Scenic design is by Derek McLane, with costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Peter Kaczorowski and sound design by Jeremy S. Bloom. The production supervisor is PRF Productions, the production stage manager is Valerie A. Peterson, and casting is by Judy Henderson, CSA.
Buried Child is presented by The New Group in association with Lisa Matlin.
