As previously reported by Playbill.com, Samantha Barks, who played the ill-fated Eponine in the film adaptation of Les Misérables, will star in the musical, which will be directed by Tony Award winner Pam MacKinnon.

Barks, whose U.K. credits include Les Miz, City of Angels, Cabaret, Oliver! and Chicago, led a recent workshop of the musical adaptation, which will be part of Berkeley's 48th season.

Berkeley Rep also announced further casting. She will be joined by Randy Blair (Hipolito), Adam Chanler-Berat (Nino), Alison Cimmet(Amandine/Philomene), Carla Duren (Gina), John Hickok (Raphael/Bretodeaux), Alyse Alan Louis (Georgette/Fluffy/Sylvie), and Paul Whitty (Joseph), with additional casting to be announced later.

Here's how Berkeley Rep bills the new musical: "Embark on a mesmerizing journey with inquisitive and charmingly shy Amélie as she turns the streets of Montmartre into a world of her own imagining, while secretly orchestrating moments of joy for those around her."

Amélie, directed by MacKinnon (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), is written by Craig Lucas (An American in Paris, Prelude to a Kiss) and features music by Daniel Messé with lyrics by Nathan Tysen (The Burnt Part Boys, Tuck Everlasting) and Messé. The show will feature scenic and costume design by David Zinn, lighting design by Jane Cox, sound design by Kai Harada, projection design by Peter Nigrini with music direction by Kimberly Grigsby and choreography by Sam Pinkleton.
