A same-sex kiss in the Singapore production of Les Miserables has been removed, according to the Associated Press.

The production had been given a “General” rating by Singapore's Media Development Authority based on the script of the musical, which did not mention the same-sex kiss.

“Under our classification code, such a scene would fall under an ‘Advisory’ rating,” the MDA stated, according to a report in The Straits Times newspaper. “The applicant decided to remove the scene so as to keep the ‘General’ rating for the rest of its run. MDA will take action against this breach of licensing conditions.”

Moses Lye, who is the head of Mediacorp VizPro International, the organizer of the production, said the kiss was meant for comic effect. “On June 3,” Lye said, “we took immediate action and worked with the producers to adapt the scene.”

The AP report did not mention which scene contained the kiss, although in various productions of Les Miserables, Thernadier kisses a man during the wedding scene as he sings “Beggars at the Feast”: “Here comes a prince/ There goes a Jew./ This one's a queer/ But what can you do?”

In New York, Les Miserables plays the Imperial Theatre; performances continue through September 4.
