The Model Apartment centers on Max and Lola, an older Jewish couple who, haunted by memories of the past, leave their Brooklyn home to retire to a condominium in Florida. The couple's plans for a peaceful life in a retirement community are threatened by the unexpected arrival of their daughter and the haunting legacy of memories she brings with her.

The Model Apartment, for which Marguiles received a Drama-Logue Award when it was first produced at Los Angeles Theatre Center in 1988, had its New York premiere at Primary Stages in 1995. In New York, the play won an Obie Award and was nominated for both the Drama Desk and the Dramatists Guild/Hull-Warriner Awards.

La Jolla Playhouse, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, was founded by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer, and then revived in 1983 under Des McAnuff's leadership. In 1993, the not-for-profit San Diego theatre won the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.

The West Coast Premiere of Jonathan Larson's Tony- and Pulitzer-winning rock musical, Rent is currently running at La Jolla until Sept. 13. The Model Apartment begins previews July 22 and closes August 24.
