The New Village Arts Theatre in Carlsbad, CA, will celebrate its tenth anniversary by producing its first musical, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods. The fairy-tale themed modern classic will play the theatre Sept. 22-Oct. 31, with an official opening set for Sept. 25.

James Vasquez will direct a cast including Steve Gunderson as the Baker, Melissa Fernandes as the Baker's Wife, Devlin as the Witch, Randall Dodge as Cinderella's Prince/the Wolf, Sarah Errington as Cinderella, Sandra Ellis-Troy as Jack's Mother, Trevor Sanderson as Jack, Hannah Rose Kornfeld as Little Red Riding Hood, Manny Fernandes as Mysterious Man/Narrator, Karenssa LeGear as Rapunzel, Derek Smith as Rapunzel's Prince, Kathryn Herbruck as Cinderella's Stepmother, Susanna Kurner and Sunny Smith as Cinderella's Stepsisters, Don Evans as Cinderella's Father, Kyle Lucy as the Steward, Virginia Gregg as Snow White/Grandma and Carly Dellinger as Sleeping Beauty. Elan McMahan and Charlie Reuter will provide musical direction. Tim Wallace will design the sets, Shirley Pierson will design the costumes, and Jason Bieber will design the lights.

According to press notes, "Once Upon a Time…a baker and his wife embark on a quest into the woods, to fulfill the witch next door’s request and lift a curse that has kept them from having a child. Along the way, they meet Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), Cinderella, two handsome princes and a motley assortment of other characters, all on quests of their own. Stephen Sondheim’s enormously popular musical answers the question of what really happens after 'Happily Ever After' and includes some of the most beautiful songs in the musical theatre canon, including 'Giants in the Sky,' 'Children Will Listen' and 'No One Is Alone.'"
