The landmark Shanghai concert is part of a four-day Asia tour, the first for the orchestra since 1997. Repertoire to be performed includes Ives Decoration Day from New England Holidays Symphony, Schumann's Cello Concerto in A minor, and Brahms' Symphony No. 2 in D major. Cellist Lynn Harrell will join the orchestra in Shanghai and Hong Kong, where the concerto will also be performed on February 12.
Repertoire for the Hong Kong concerts features a mix of American and European composers, including Copland, Ives, Schumann and Brahms.
National Chinese public television CCTV will air SFSMedia's television documentary about Tchaikovsky's work, Keeping Score: Michael Tilson Thomas on Music, before the performance of that composer's work in Hong Kong on February 9.
To mark the 25th anniversary of the sister city relationship between San Francisco and Shanghai, Tilson Thomas and orchestra musicians will give master clases at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music on February 13.
