Santa Fe Opera will kick off its 2018 season June 29 with a new production of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. The opera is part of the centennial celebration #BernsteinAt100, which will bring works from the composer around the world over two years.
The production, directed by Laurent Pelly, will run through August 25, which will mark what would have been the late composer’s 100th birthday.
Leading the cast are Alek Shrader in the title role; joining him are Brenda Rae as Cunegonde, Kevin Burdette as Pangloss, Helene Schneiderman as Old Lady, Jarrett Ott as Maximilian, and Richard Troxell as Governor/Vanderdendur.
Puccini’s Madame Butterfly—which incidentally opened the company in 1957—will follow, with performances running June 30 through August 24. The popular staging will feature Kelly Kaduce and Ana María Martínez, who share the role of Cio Cio San.
Also set for the 2018 lineup are John Adams and Peter Sellars’ Doctor Atomic, Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers, and a new staging of Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos from Tim Albery.
