News Sapphires Musical Headed to the Silver Screen The Sapphires, the hit Australian musical that won a Helpmann Award in 2005, will be made into a feature film, according to Variety.

Wayne Blair will direct the movie musical based on a screenplay penned by Tony Briggs, who wrote the musical. Goalpost Pictures produces. The Sapphires, according to the industry paper, "follows the fortunes of four Aboriginal women who form a singing group in the 1960s, styled on The Supremes, and are sent to Vietnam to entertain Australian troops."

The musical was inspired by Briggs' mother and aunt, Laurel Robinson and Lois Peeler, respectively.

Casting for the film has yet to be announced.
