CHICAGO--David Schwimmer, a Chicago boy who made it big as star of TV's "Friends," has returned to rejoin the troupe that launched him, Lookingglass Theatre Company.

Opening May 13 at the Jane Addams Hull House Theatre, The Idiot depicts Fyodor Doestoevsky's epileptic Prince Myshkin (Schwimmer), a fool of God who attempts to save a young, brilliant and self- destructive woman from the brutal insincerity of high society.

Energized by an adaptation by director and ensemble member David Catlin that fuses a melodramatic thriller with a spiritual quest, the production features Larry DiStasi, Phil Smith, Heidi Stillman and Schwimmer.

To illustrate the title character's heightened experiences, Catlin's version uses film, lighting effects, and choreographed movement. According to set designer Dan Ostling, "We've sought a look that captures the literary nuances in a new theatrical form so that Doestoyevsky's fiery characters can emerge from their austere surroundings."
