Who needs Rockefeller Center? Broadway has its own holiday tree lighting ceremony, and it's Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 5:30 PM. This third annual event takes place next to the TKTS discount tickets booth at Broadway and West 46 St. Lighting the tree this season will be Tony Randall, the current Christmas Carol Scrooge; Bebe Neuwirth, Chicago's murderess Velma Kelly; and Linda Lavin, who plays writer Lillian Hellman.
Other Broadway performers, surprise guests and carolers are expected for the non-sectarian shindig, which is free and requires no reservations.
Last year's lighters were headed by Nathan Lane (Love! Valour! Compassion) and Carol Channing (Hello, Dolly!). According to presenters TDF, BC/EFA and the Times Square Business Development Service, "The Broadway Holiday Tree is lit in honor of those we love, remembrance of those we've lost, and in celebration of the joy of the season."
