At the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards ceremony, held in New York City on June 7—one day after the Tonys—Combs received a trophy as the top menswear designer of the year for his Sean John collection. In doing so, he beat out such stalwarts as Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors.

Combs had joked backstage at the Tonys that he would lose the fashion award. "Every year I go, and every year I lose," said Combs. "But I'm just happy to be there." His win came after four previous nominations.

''I'm very happy as you can see,'' said Combs, AP reported. ''I've had some things I've had on my mind for a few years.''
