Off-Broadway News Second Stage Adds World Premiere of Cardinal by Greg Pierce Sweat director Kate Whoriskey will helm the new play Off-Broadway in winter 2018.

Cardinal, by Kid Victory playwright Greg Pierce, will receive its world premiere with Second Stage Theater. Sweat director Kate Whoriskey will helm the Off-Broadway production at the Tony Kiser Theater in winter 2018. .

Casting, production dates, and a full creative team will be announced at a later date.

Here’s how 2ST bills the new play: “Paint it red. So begins Lydia’s wild idea to invigorate her Rust Belt town. But when a whip-smart entrepreneur co-opts her scheme, a precarious rivalry is born. A battle for the town’s soul ensues, causing its obsessive mayor, its defiant matriarch, and the rest of its residents to question who they are and where they're headed.”

Pierce’s musical collaboration with John Kander, Kid Victory, premiered Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre. His plays Her Requiem and Slowgirl were both staged at Lincoln Center Theater.

Cardinal joins Second Stage’s 2017–2018 season, which includes the previously announced revival of Torch Song by Harvey Fierstein directed by Moisés Kaufman and starring Michael Urie and Mercedes Ruehl, as well as the New York premiere of Tracy Letts’ Mary Page Marlowe, directed by Lila Neugebauer.

The theatre’s inaugural Broadway season will kick off with Oscar winner Kenneth Lonergan's Lobby Hero starring Chris Evans and Michael Cera; it will also include the Broadway premiere of Young Jean Lee’s Straight White Men.
