Jennifer Holliday, who won a Tony Award in 1981 for her volcanic performance as Effie White in the original Dreamgirls, returned to Broadway October 4 in the role of singer Shug Avery in the Tony-winning revival of The Color Purple at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
