Though Lord Graham Russell is best known as the guitarist and singer-songwriter for the rock band Air Supply, his musical career began performing in Jesus Christ Superstar in 1975. Now, Russell is coming full circle with his first rock musical, A Wall Apart, which is debuting this summer in New York as part of the The New York Musical Festival.
Go behind the scenes with Russell in the studio as he performs a song from the new show in the video above.
The world premiere of A Wall Apart is presented by NYMF and NewYorkRep. The musical features a book by Sam Goldstein and Craig Clyde and follows the stories of three brothers in East Berlin during the building of the infamous wall.
“I've come full circle writing this musical about the beginning of Rock 'n' Roll in Europe. We are contemplating many of the same issues today in our country and throughout the world as Germany did more than 50 years ago when The Berlin Wall was built,“ comments Russell in a press statement. “Theatre presents an intimate, entertaining and powerful way to tell a story that raises these timeless issues. And throughout history, we know the influence music, especially rock & roll, has had in making us think, making a statement and moving us toward action.“
The cast is made up of Maddie Shea Baldwin (Bright Star), Leslie Becker (Wicked), Emily Behny (The Fantasticks), Jordan Bondurant (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), Darren Ritchie (Thoroughly Modern Millie), Matt Rosell (Les Misérables), Josh Tolle (National Tour of Kinky Boots), with Mili Diaz, Jamal Christopher Douglas, Amanda Downey, Lindsay Estelle Dunn, Sean Green, Jr., Emily Kristen Morris, and Vincent Ortega.
Performances will run at The Acorn Theatre at Theatre Row July 25–30 only. For tickets, visit NYMF.org/wallapart.
