Like the most recent Broadway revival, which was directed by Tony winner John Doyle, the musical is set in an insane asylum.

David C. Carnevale directs the production, which continues through Feb. 13 at the California venue. The director's conception of the musical, according to the Orange County Register, "negates the automatic assumption that the men confined to Bedlam are gay – they simply love musical theater enough to want to enact one of their favorite stories, and a blood-curdling one at that."

The cast is headed by Kevin Carranza as Benjamin Barker, Vahan Oknayan as Anthony Hope, Tom Royer as Turpin, Frankie Rodriguez as Johanna and John Sparks as Mrs. Nellie Lovett.

Theatre Out, according to its website, "presents works by gay and lesbian playwrights, as well as pieces about the gay and lesbian community, and strives to explore both the classics that shaped our history and the new works that are continuing to form, examine and reshape our culture. Theatre Out is passionate about telling the stories of the GLBT community with romantic comedies, intriguing musicals, thrilling mysteries, serious dramas and everything in between."
