Performances began July 26 for New York City Center’s concert revival of Kirsten Childs’ The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin. Robert O’Hara directs the limited engagement as part of the Encores! Off-Center season, which kicked off earlier this month with Assassins.
Childs’ musical from 2000 follows a young African-American dancer, Viveca, from West Coast suburbia to Broadway, all the while navigating the politics of race and gender in an attempt to uncover her own identity. Tony winner Nikki M. James (The Book of Mormon) stars in the title role.
