The world premiere of The Beast in the Jungle is set to begin performances at the Vineyard Theatre Off-Broadway May 4. The original new musical is a collaboration between Tony-winning composer John Kander, Tony-nominated playwright David Thompson, and Tony-winning director and choreographer Susan Stroman. The three previously collaborated with the late Fred Ebb on The Scottsboro Boys.

Adapted from Henry James’ 1903 novella, The Beast in the Jungle tells the story of John Marcher, a man haunted by personal demons, and whose great yet unfulfilled love affair with an unforgettable woman spans decades and continents.

The production stars Tony Yazbeck (On the Town), Irina Dvorovenko (The Americans’), Teagle F. Bougere (The Crucible), and Peter Friedman (Ragtime) as well as Maira Barriga (Miami City Ballet’s Corps De Ballet), Elizabeth Dugas (The Metropolitan Opera’s The Merry Widow), Leah Hofmann (Something Rotten!), Naomi Kakuk (The Producers), Brittany Marcin Maschmeyer (Bullets Over Broadway), and Erin Moore (Shuffle Along).

Yazbeck has been a special guest performer on Playbill’s Broadway on the High Seas cruises.
