In the opening musical number from the 2017 National High School Musical Theatre Awards (known as the Jimmy Awards), which were held June 26 at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre, the talented young performers mash up—and put their own unique twists on—songs from current Broadway productions.
The opening medley, directed by Van Kaplan, features “The Heat Is on in Saigon” from Miss Saigon, “Journey to the Past” from Anastasia, “Waving Through a Window” from Dear Evan Hansen, “Put on Your Sunday Clothes” from Hello, Dolly!, “My Shot” from Hamilton, and “Welcome to the Rock/New York” from Come from Away, among others.
This year’s awards featured 74 finalists—the largest pool of talent the awards have seen.
As previously announced, high school students Sofia Deler and Tony Moreno earned the top honors for the evening. Both were awarded a $10,000 scholarship, while the remaining finalists received $2,500 toward their education.
