The play is about "three London twenty-somethings involved in an unconventional love triangle that blurs the boundaries between friendship, love and sexual identity."
Talya Klein directs the staging, which opens May 9 at Chashama Theatre, 217 E. 42nd Street between Second and Third Avenue.
According to production notes, Clocks and Whistles "centers around Henry, an introverted young man who's making the first tentative steps toward considering himself gay. Despite this, he remains infatuated with his best friend Anne, an aspiring actress who's as outgoing as Henry is shy. When Henry develops a strong attraction to the hedonistic and free-wheeling Trevor, they begin to see each other — until the bisexual Trevor meets Anne and the two begin a secret affair. Confronted by this betrayal, Henry finds himself caught between his interest in Trevor, his deep feelings for Anne and the fear of losing both of them forever."
The play premiered in 1996 at the Bush Theatre in London in a production featuring Kate Beckinsale, and received solid notices and a Time Out Award.
The Off-Broadway cast features Meghan Andrews (Broadway's The Grapes of Wrath with Steppenwolf Theatre, Off-Broadway's Trip to Bountiful at Signature Theatre), Christopher Randolph (Broadway's King Lear with Christopher Plummer), Catherine Eaton (Bee-Luther-Hatchee at the Blue Heron), Jerzy Gwiazdowski (of the upcoming Julie Taymor movie "Across the Universe") and David Mawhinney. Adamson's new play, Southwark Fair, recently opened at the Cottesloe Theatre in London in a production directed by Nicholas Hytner. His other works include Grace Note (Peter Hall Company/Old Vic Theatre), Drink, Dance Laugh and Lie (Bush Theatre), and The Playhouse Keepers (Private Drama/Globe).
Klein is an award-winning director and playwright whose work has been seen in New York, regionally and abroad. Her credits include the U.K. premiere of Keith Reddin's Black Snow and Peter Barnes' Red Noses (Baron's Court Theatre, London) as well as Prelude at NYC's Looking Glass Theatre. She is a graduate of Duke University, and has worked at Manhattan Theatre Club, London's National Theatre, and North Carolina’s Manbites Dog Theatre.
Designers are Lex Liang (scenic), Jesse Belsky (lighting), Elizabeth Flauto (costumes) and Zachary Williamson (sound).
