Yorktown Stage in suburban Westchester County, NY, will present the classic Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents musical Gypsy April 24-26, starring Sally Mayes as Madame Rose.

Mayes, who received Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations for her performance as Ilona in the revival of She Loves Me, will play the ultimate stage mother.

She will be joined by Sarah Beth White as Dainty June and Joel Chambers as Tulsa. The trio of strippers--Tessie, Mazeppa and Electra--will be played by Donna Fox, Irene Howard and Deb Mengert, respectively. Michael McAssey will play Herbie, and Devon Frieder is Louise.

August Abatecola will direct the limited engagement with choreography by Carrie Silvernail and musical direction by Ricky Romano. Barry Liebman produces.

"We are so thankful to present Sally Mayes to our patrons," said producer Liebman. "She lives locally and is happy to lend her support for the success of regional and community theatre." Director Abatecola added, "It is my distinct pleasure to direct Sally as she heads a production with so many gifted and talented actors."

Gypsy is a 1959 musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents. The musical is loosely based on the 1954 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist. Gypsy, according to press notes, "follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise two daughters to perform onstage and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life. The character of Louise is based on Lee, and the character of June is based on Lee's sister, the actress June Havoc." Yorktown Stage is located in the Yorktown Community Cultural Center, at 1974 Commerce Street (off Veterans Road) in Yorktown Heights, NY. Tickets are $26; seniors (63+) and students (12-22) $21; children (under 11) $19. Group discounts are available. For tickets visit Yorktownstage.org.
