Signature is known for its mission of one playwright/one season. Guare's oeuvre was explored by Signature in 1998-99.
Michael Greif (Rent) directs a cast that includes Lili Taylor (Aunt Dan and Lemon) and Sherie Rene Scott (Tony nominee for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels). Landscape of the Body began previews March 28 and plays to May 21 at Signature Theatre Company's Peter Norton Space at 555 W. 42nd Street.
Signature has established a special $15 ticket price for all performances of the originally scheduled eight-week run (regularly $55), made possible by the lead sponsorship of Time Warner, Inc. The $15 ticket initiative will include the August Wilson series to begin in the fall of 2006.
Landscape of the Body asks, "What are we after we lose everything?," according to Signature. "1970s Greenwich Village hosts a slew of mysterious and seemingly isolated events that connect a group of people on a nightmarish quest for the American Dream. Through twists in time and with some help from a singing narrator back from the dead, John Guare weaves an amazingly entertaining tale of their tragic and comic collisions that force them to discover what it is like to be left with—or blessed with—nothing but themselves."
The company of Landscape of the Body includes Jonathan Fried, Brian Sgambati, Paul Sparks and Bernard White. Guare is the OBIE and New York Drama Critics Circle Award-winning author of The House of Blue Leaves, Six Degrees of Separation (for which he also wrote the screenplay), A Few Stout Individuals, as well as the Oscar-nominated screenplay for Louis Malle's "Atlantic City." He won a Tony for his libretto to the musical Two Gentlemen of Verona and was nominated for a Tony for his libretto to Sweet Smell of Success. His recent adaptation of His Girl Friday premiered to great acclaim at London's National Theater. Guare received the 2004 Gold Medal in Drama from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
The Landscape creative team includes Allen Moyer (sets); Miranda Hoffman (costumes); Howell Binkley (lights); and Brett R. Jarvis (sound). Michael Friedman is the musical director.
