Show Time! The First 100 Years of the American Musical, created, written, and performed by Ben West, will be presented September 13–16 at Theatre at Saint Peter’s.
The production is the first part of the Show Time! Trilogy, the result of a new three-year partnership between UnsungMusicalsCo. (founded by West) and The York Theatre Company. All three productions will play the Theatre at Saint Peter’s, home to The York.
Show Time! features over two dozen songs in a live-action documentary, weaving music and performance through a narrative of world, cultural, and theatre history from the mid-1800s through 1999.
The production features musical continuity and arrangements by Fran Minarik and direction and musical staging by Shannon Lewis.
Leading up to its premiere, Show Time! will offer a sneak peek at the New York Musical Festival July 18 and 21 at 7 PM. The concert event will feature three sequences from the show as well as a discussion led by Variety’s Gordon Cox.
In fall 2019, The York Theatre Company will host UMC’s production of 45 Minutes from Coontown, focused on black musical writers, and in fall 2020, the York will host UMC’s production of 68 Ways to Go, about female musical writers.
On August 20, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center will offer Archive Dive: The Research Behind Show Time!, a program which will showcase items from the NYPL collections used to create the upcoming production.
