Melville Slept Here -- no, that's not a bit of 19th century grafitti, it's the name of Norman Allen's new play, opening March 30 at Arlington, VA's Signature Theatre.

Local actors Jason Patrick Bowcutt, Grainne Cassidy, Nancy Grosshans, Andrea Hatfield, John Lescault and Alan Wade will appear in this story of a middle-aged couple who become caretakers to a historic home on Cape Cod. Their peaceful life gets interrupted, though, by "a prose-spouting sea captaion, a batty Cape matron, and her society-conscious daughter."

Author Allen is a playwright-in-residence at Signature Theatre (not to be confused with the Off-Broadway theatre company of the same name). His Here To Stay ran at Signature in 1995, and his other works include the one-acts Jenny Saint Joan and Waiting In Tobolsk.

Director Tom Prewitt has worked extensively at DC's Woolly Mammoth company, as well as at NY's Jean Cocteau Rep and the Delaware Theatre Company. Designing Melville are Daniel MacLean Wagner (lighting), Lou Stancari (sets), Heidi Alexander (costumes), Ronnie Gunderson (props), and David Maddox (sound and score).

For tickets ($19-$22) and information on Melville Slept Here at Signature Theatre on South Four Mile Run Drive, March 26-May 4, call (703) 218-6500. --By David Lefkowitz
