Based on George Eliot's novel "Silas Marner," the "bound-for-Broadway" musical features a book by Captain Louie's Anthony Stein, music by Tony Award-winning orchestrator Bruce Coughlin and lyrics by Michael Korie. The latter was Tony-nominated for his lyrics for the musical Grey Gardens.
Meridee Stein, who is president of Plain Language, will produce and direct the forthcoming reading.
Casting will be announced at a later date.
For his lyrics to Grey Gardens, Michael Korie was nominated for Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards. Other musicals in development include Doll and Meet Mister Future, both with Gardens composer Scott Frankel. Korie penned the libretto for The Grapes of Wrath opera, which features a score by Ricky Ian Gordon. He also co-wrote lyrics with Amy Powers to composer Lucy Simon's music for Zhivago, which was seen at the La Jolla Playhouse. Korie's lyrics were awarded the Edward Kleban Award and the Jonathan Larson Award.
