Continuing his long-running transformation from Rock Idol into Pillar of the Establishment, Sir Elton John has accepted the position of Chairman of the Old Vic Theatre Trust. The Old Vic is currently hosting Athol Fugard's play The Island, which closes April 13.

As an institution, the Old Vic has plenty of public goodwill but seems to have lost its way slightly. Is it a receiving house or a producing one? What is its policy? These are questions for the incoming artistic director, Matthew Warchus, to settle, but having Sir Elton on the Board should certainy be a boost to any future fund-raising.
