Women take to the air as San Diego's Old Globe opens its staging of Jenny Laird's Sky Girls, Jan. 15.

The World War II drama, which began previews at the southern California stage Jan. 10, will play at the Cassius Carter Centre Stage through Feb. 15.

Sky Girls blends fact and fiction as it tells the story of five (fictional) women who are in training to become World War II WASPs (US Women Air Force Service Pilots) in 1944. The Sweetwater, Texas-set drama finds the winged wanna-bes guided in spirit by (real-life) flyer Jacqueline Cochran — creator of the WASP program in 1943 who earned a Distinguished Service Medal for services to her country .

Globe associate director Brendon Fox directs the work with a cast that includes Kristin Fiorella, Judith Hawking, Breean Julian, Jennifer Lynn McMillin, Sarah Rafferty and Carolyn Stone.

The design team for Sky Girls includes Russell Metheny (scenic), Holly Poe Durbin (costume), Jennifer Setlow (lighting) and Lindsay Jones (sound).

For tickets to Sky Girls, call The Old Globe at (619) 23-GLOBE (9-225). For more information, visit the theatre's website at www.theoldglobe.org.
