Playwright Alena Smith has been selected to workshop her play The Sacrifices at the Voices of Change Festival in Bielefeld, Germany.

The Sacrifices, which was presented as part of the 2009 Summer Play Festival at the Public Theater, will be translated into German for the festival workshop that runs April 22-25.

The Voices of Change Festival jointly addresses the American and German perspectives of change and crisis in dramatic form. Other New York theatre companies participating in the festival are SoHo Rep, New Dramatists, The Flea Theater, Clubbed Thumb and New Haven's Yale Repertory Theater.

Smith's plays include Plucker, The Lacy Project, It Or Her, The Piven Monologues, Alice Eat Your Words and Saturnalia in Poughkeepsie. She is a member of the 2009 Emerging Writers Group at The Public Theater.

As previously reported, the Summer Play Festival will take a hiatus in 2010 while the Public Theater renovates its Lafayette Street Home. SPF has been in residence there since 2008 and intends to resume programming in 2011 at the Public.

SPF was founded by Arielle Tepper Madover, who has produced the Broadway productions of Hamlet, Mary Stuart, Hair, 33 Variations Frost/Nixon, Equus, The Pillowman, Democracy, Spamalot, Jumpers and A Class Act. Visit SummerPlayFestival.
