Cote, who is also a playwright and librettist, staged the premiere of the play at the Emerging Collector with Babilla performing. It was later offered as part of the New York International Fringe Festival and was one of Horse Trade Theater's first main stage productions. It returns through Oct. 5 at Under St. Marks as part of Horse Trade Theater's 15th season.
Robert Honeywell (Every Play Ever Written, The Lathe of Heaven) will appear in the 90-minute play about religion and politics, which centers on a man who looks like Adolf Hitler.
Here's how it's billed: "A man who bears an uncanny resemblance to Adolf Hitler finds himself idolized by an orgiastic, underground, Führer-worshipping cult. In a monologue that’s alternately hilarious and terrifying, we glimpse the true nature of worship, authority and humanity’s tragic urge to obey. His heartbroken friend, our narrator, leads us down a twisted path to uncover the mystery of what really happened."
The production team includes designers Gregg Bellon (lighting design) and Chris Chappell (sound design).
Babilla, who died in 2011, was an actor, playwright, director and designer. His works included Three Angels Dancing on a Needle; Eating the Audience: A Presbyterian Tragedy; The True Story of a Woman Born in Iran and Raised to Heaven in Manhattan; The Rise and Fall of H.M. Dick; Suddenly Something Recklessly Gay, or Cirque de Ca-Ca; All About Jeez, or the Sacred Squirt; The Sisters Karamazov; Homo Americanus; Othello and the Circumcisèd Turk; and Assyrian Monkey Fantasy. Cote's plays include Otherland, Rude News and other short plays. He penned the librettos for The Scarlet Ibis, with composer Stefan Weisman, which premieres at HERE in 2015; as well as Safe Word and The Companion with composer Robert Paterson. The Companion premieres next April at Roulette.
