Silence, the British historical comedy by Moira Buffini, will extend its run at Off-Broadway's Ohio Theatre through June 29. Synapse Theatre Company's artistic director Ginervra Bull directs this New York premiere, originally set to close June 23. Silence opened June 3.
Silence is set in the year 1000 AD in Britain. Political strife has forced 14-year old Viking prince Silence and his new 30-year old French bride Ymma to flee the lecherous King Ethelred, bent on enjoying the couple's favors. The two run away with the priest Roger, the soldier Eadric and a servant, but all the lust in the kingdom begins to affect the five companions, driving each to question his or her desires.
Susan Smith Blackburn Award-winning playwright Buffini is the author of Doomsday Girl, LovePlay, Blavatsky's Tower and the solo piece, Jordan. As a commissioned writer for the Royal National Theatre of England, she will see the premiere of her Dinner later this year. Silence is her first New York production.
Obie winner Matthew Maher (Race of the Ark Tattoo) is featured in the cast. Silence also stars Abby Savage (Dido, Queen of Carthage), Jessica Claire (Machinal), Jessica Chandlee Smith (Mabou Mines' Peter & Wendy), Chan Casey and Jens Martin Krummel.
Tickets are $19. The Ohio Theatre is located at 66 Wooster Street. For reservations, call (212) 206-1515. — By Christine Ehren
