The final cast featured Tony Award nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega, Maria Cellario (The Royal Family) and Flor de Liz Perez (The House that will not Stand).

The production began performances May 6, prior to an official opening May 18. It played 15 previews and 33 regular performances at The Vagina Monologues' original Off-Broadway home. The preview cast was Miriam Colón, Kate del Castillo and Angélica Vale.

The show's producers, Morris Gilbert and Federico González Compeán, said in a statement, "We are proud to have presented this production at the original New York City home of The Vagina Monologues. Even with positive notices and enthusiastic audiences, the show is not attracting the numbers needed to make this economically viable. We hope to announce plans to bring the production to other US cities."  

The production previously announced summer casting, which was to include ALMA Award winner Judy Reyes ("Devious Maids," "Scrubs"), appearing June 24-July 20; "Caso Cerrado" host Ana Maria Polo, July 22-27; and Mexican actress Andrea Legarreta ("Hoy"), July 29-Aug. 3.

Gilbert and Compeán, who are the producers of the long-running Mexico City production of Los Monólogos de la Vagina, presented the New York return that was directed by Jaime Matarredona. The New York production was modeled after the Mexico City production. Portions of tickets sold benefit Ensler's global activism campaign V-Day, which seeks to end violence against women.

The original Obie Award-winning production of The Vagina Monologues played 1,381 performances at The Westside Theatre from 1999 to 2003. It has played in over 140 countries and in over 48 languages. A television version featuring Ensler was produced for HBO in 2002.

Ensler's plays include Necessary Targets, The Treatment, The Good Body and Emotional Creature. Her new play O.P.C. will premiere at the American Repertory Theater in November. She is the recipient of the 2011 Isabelle Stevenson Award.
