The classic musical Guys & Dolls, written by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, with music by Frank Loesser, opens April 16 in Barcelona's Catalunya National Theatre.
After his previous mountings of two Stephen Sondheim musicals, Golfus of Rome (Forum) and Sweeney Todd, director Mario Gas (who also recently premiered Master Class in Madrid) stages the Spanish premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical which has twice been on Broadway.
Cast members are Vicky Penya, who received excellent reviews for her role as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Montserrat Carulla, Abel Folk, Pep Molina and Monica Lopez.
Gas, who is also the musical director for this play, respects the original score, while introducing several modifications in the plot. His objective has been -- according to his own words -- " . . . to surprise the viewer with a set design based on the sixties".
Guys & Dolls describes the world of New York City gamblers seen through the eyes of 1930's Journalist, Damon Runyon. This version will include 35 actors and a 15-musician orchestra. Guys and Dolls runs at Teatro Nacional de Catalunya. Barcelona.
