Gavin Lee just finished playing a curmudgeonly squid on Broadway, and don’t expect him to be any less gruff in his next role. The Tony and Olivier Award nominee will take on the title role in How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical this holiday season at Madison Square Garden. As previously reported, performances will run December 13 through December 30 at the Hulu Theater.

Featuring a book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin (with additional songs by Dr. Seuss and Albert Hague), the musical is also set to play Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia as part of a holiday tour. Matt August helms the production, based on Jack O’Brien’s original direction.

Earlier this year, Lee earned a Tony nomination for his performance as Squidward Tentacles in SpongeBob SquarePants. He was previously nominated for playing Bert in Mary Poppins; he also received an Olivier nod for originating the role in the musical’s London premiere.

“I am thrilled to step in to the furry, stinky green shoes of the world’s most beloved Christmas bad boy this holiday season,” he said. “As a dad myself, I know first-hand the magic of introducing kids to live theatre and I look forward to hearts growing three sizes as they experience this beloved story in a whole new way.”

Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
