The film of the hit 2006 Broadway musical has been in development for several years. As previously reported, director McG is attached with Playtone producing.

"We've been working hard to put the movie together," Sater told Playbill.com March 31. "Not a day goes by that I'm not on the phone about it. We're hopeful that we can shoot it late this summer and early fall."

The writers, who earned a Tony Award for their score, have also penned a new song for the film. "What the movie represents for me, is an opportunity not only to reinvent Spring Awakening for the screen, but to explore story elements which I couldn't on stage. The song reperesents a part of that opportunity," Sater said.

In an interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune, Sheik also revealed news of the song and a potential timeline for the film adaptation.

Casting is underway.

The original Broadway production featured John Gallagher, Jr., Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele.

Sater and Sheik co-wrote the musical based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind. Sater authored the Tony-winning book and lyrics to Spring Awakening, which has music by Grammy and Tony-winning singer-songwriter Sheik.

Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The original Broadway production of Spring Awakening featured direction by Michael Mayer and choreography by Bill T. Jones.

Songs featured in the Tony-winning score are "All That's Known," "And Then There Were None," "Blue Wind/Don't Do Sadness," "Left Behind," "Mamma Who Bore Me," "My Junk, "The Bitch of Living," "The Dark I Know Well," "The Guilty Ones," "The Song of Purple Summer," "The Word of Your Body," "Those You've Known," "Totally Fucked," "Touch Me," "Whispering" and "The Mirror-Blue Night."
