Theatre folks haven't heard much from Squonk, the Pittsburgh-based company, since its hit production of Bigsmorgasbordwunderwerk closed at P.S. 122 in late summer. The eccentric show received good reviews but was unable to find an appropriate theatre for an extended commercial run. Well Squonk isn't dead, and its nabbed one of the best theatres in the city. The show, a mixture of performance art, opera, puppetry and food, will reopen at Broadway Helen Hayes Theatre in February, said a spokesperson for Martin Markinson, the theatre's owner. A specific date has not been set.
Squonk was founded in 1992 as Squonk Opera, and has toured the U.S. and Canada extensively. Bigsmorgasbordwunderwerk closed at P.S. 122 on Aug. 28.
The Helen Hayes current resident, Epic Proportions, closes on Dec. 19.
