News Stage Version of Carrie's War to Play West End's Apollo Theatre A stage version of Nina Bawden's best-selling 1973 novel "Carrie's War" will begin performances at the West End's Apollo Theatre June 18, prior to an official opening June 24. The production will play a limited season to Sept. 12 only.

Previously seen at the Lilian Baylis Theatre at Sadler's Wells in 2006, this adaptation is by Emma Reeves, who also previously adapted "Little Women" for a stage version at the Duchess Theatre in 2004.

Carrie's War is based on the author's own childhood experiences as an evacuee in Wales during the War, and it has been adapted twice for television by the BBC. In the story, Carrie Willow and her brother Nick are wartime evacuees, billeted to the mining valleys in Wales with old Mr. Evans and his kind sister Lou. At Christmas, they are sent to Druid's Bottom to collect a goose from Mrs. Gotobed where they meet Hepzibah, the witch and eccentric Mister Johnny, and hear about the curse of an ancient skull.

Bawden is one of Britain's most distinguished and best-loved novelists both for children and adults. She has published over 40 novels, including her autobiography "In My Own Time" and "Dear Austen," a powerful essay to her late husband Austen Kark, who was killed in the Potters Bar train crash in 2002. In 2004 she received the S.T. Dupont Golden Pen Award for a Lifetime's Contribution to Literature.

Reeves' TV writing credits include "The Story of Tracy Beaker," "Doctors," "Belonging," "The Murder of Princess Diana" and an adaptation of "Until The Real Thing Comes Along" (the last two for Working Title TV/Lifetime channel).

Andrew Loudon directs a cast, which includes Sarah Edwardson as Carrie and Prunella Scales as Mrs Gotobed. The production is designed by Edward Lipscomb. It is produced by Novel Theatre in association with Nica Burns and Max Weitzenhoffer for Nimax Theatres. To book tickets contact the box office at 0844 412 4658 or visit www.NimaxTheatres.com.
