Elena Ricardo

Here, via email, we hear from singing actress Elena Ricardo, who is currently playing Sophie Sheridan in Broadway's long-running hit Mamma Mia! at the Broadhurst Theatre.

What show recently impressed you?
Of Mice and Men was such a pleasant surprise! It never really resonated with me when I read it in high school, but James Franco, Chris O'Dowd and really just the entire cast were totally inspiring. And Bullets Over Broadway was so much fun! What I would give to be a foot taller and be able to move like those girls do!

What production are you most excited to see?
Hunchback of Notre Dame has always been a no brainer for me in terms of becoming a musical! The music in the movie gives me goosebumps, so I can't wait to hear that score brought to life with a bunch of insane Broadway singers backed by a God-knows-how-big orchestra... LIVE!!! I'm welling up just thinking about it.

What play/musical would you most like to revive on Broadway, and which role would you want to play?
I know I'm such a teenager but Spring Awakening, please!! That show changed my life when I saw it and even more when I got to do it regionally with some of the greatest people I've ever met. I'd love to play Wendla and rock out to that incredible music again!

What are your current/upcoming projects?
I've just recently started to feel settled into Sophie, so when I'm not trying to maintain her Mediterannean spray tan, I'm just trying to learn as much as I can. I'm slowly getting back into the acting classes that I owe so much of what I know to. Outside of that, I'm attempting to pick up some Spanish, piano, and even getting certified as a Spin Instructor! I'm holding off on teaching for a bit, but once I do, I dare you to take my class.
