Over 80 Broadway and television stars will team up for the annual Broadway Sleep Out on August 21 benefiting Covenant House. The sleep out, which takes place outside the Covenant House New York Crisis Shelter, sees participants spend the night on cardboard boxes on the pavement in a show of support for homeless youth.
Among this year’s participants are Falsettos star Stephanie J. Block, Darius de Haas, Capathia Jenkins, and Angela Grovey. Participants raise money in the lead-up to the sleep out, which benefits the shelter and the services it provides. There are 21 Covenant House locations throughout U.S., Canada, and Latin America, serving more than 56,000 homeless young people each year.
“Thousands of homeless young people turn to Covenant House for help every year. Many of them are talented artists themselves, rappers and poets and painters and musicians, all with their own stories to tell,“ commented Covenant House President Kevin Ryan. “For our friends from at the top of their game to step off of the stage and into the streets is such a powerful thing for these young people to see.“
The Sleep Out is an annual, one-night fundraising event, beginning with the young people of Covenant House meeting and speaking with the Broadway community at the crisis shelter at 460 West 41st Street, New York.
