Speech & Debate, the breakthrough 2007 play for 2016 Tony Award winner Stephen Karam (The Humans), has been filmed with a cast that is packed with stage stars, including Roger Bart, Skylar Astin, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Gideon Glick, Austin McKenzie and Sarah Steele, who is currently co-starring in The Humans on Broadway and who appeared in the original Off-Broadway production. Steele is also known for playing the quick-witted daughter on TV's The Good Wife.
No release date for Speech & Debate has been announced.
Tom Rice of Sycamore Pictures is producing the film, which is directed by Dan Harris, who co-wrote Superman Returns and the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. Rice told Playbill.com that the film will be substantially different from the play.
Here is his summary: "Based on the critically acclaimed off-Broadway hit, Speech & Debate follows three teenagers brought together by a series of mishaps. Frustrated by the hypocrisy they see in their parents, teachers, and the entire school board, the unlikely trio set out to find a common truth and make their voices heard as they revive a defunct school club and take on the world. Blogging, blackmail, and Broadway belting drive the trio’s bond in this wickedly funny teen comedy."
The film was shot in 2015 in Jackson, MS.
Karam, a 2012 Pulitzer Prize finalist for Sons of the Prophet, co-wrote Columbinus, which played at the New York Theatre Workshop. His other works include Girl on Girl and the musical Emma.
