As previously reported, the 10th annual event from True Colors Theatre Company and Jujamcyn Theaters will return to Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre May 7.

The free event is open to the public and will feature high school students from around the country performing monologues by the late, celebrated American playwright. The first place winner will receive a $3,000 cash prize, the runner-up a $2,000 cash prize, and third place a $1,000 cash prize.

The semifinals will be judged by Shariffa Ali (Detroit ’67), Nehassaiu deGannes (Is God Is), and Russell Hornsby (Fences). Russell Hornsby will also join Kenny Leon, co-founder of True Colors, as a supporting emcee during the finals.

In preparation for the performance, each student works closely with director Leon, who was also one of Wilson’s closest collaborators. The students will also attend Once On This Island and Children of a Lesser God on Broadway, and each of the winners will also become eligible for college scholarship opportunities.

The competition is aimed at introducing the late Wilson’s work to new generations and nurturing his legacy. Students first compete in local, citywide, and national competitions before competing in the finals on the Broadway stage.
