Running Sept. 21-Dec. 19, the 28th annual Next Wave Festival features contemporary music, dance, theatre and opera works from around the world.

Performance artist and musician Laurie Anderson will offer the New York premiere of Delusion, a new musical work that will run Sept. 21-Oct. 3 in the Harvey Theater. "In Delusion, deeply affecting music redolent of Tibetan temple horns and Arabic strings is performed by Anderson on electronically enhanced violin with a supporting virtuoso ensemble. Delusion’s structure imitates the meandering nature of one’s personal thoughts, exploring themes from politics to personal longings, fusing the internal and external worlds into a mystical whole," according to BAM.

Composer Evan Ziporyn’s multimedia opera A House in Bali will be presented Oct. 14-16 in the Gilman Opera House. Paul Schick penned the libretto, and Jay Scheib will direct. BAM states that the work "portrays one man’s journey through South Asia and the spiritual awakenings that result. Based on the renowned memoir by composer Colin McPhee, A House in Bali traces the roots of the West's century-long infatuation with Bali through the true story of McPhee and his cohorts, anthropologist Margaret Mead and artist Walter Spies, during their 1930s sojourn there."

Stew and Passing Strange collaborator Heidi Rodewald will bring their band The Negro Problem to BAM for the world premiere of Brooklyn Omnibus Oct. 20-23 in the Harvey Theater. BAM commissioned the work that is described as a "an irreverent, lyrical, and musical exploration of life in Kings County."

Tony Award-winning Side Man playwright Leight has teamed with composer Ben Neill and lyricist Mimi Goese to create Persephone, a music theatre work that will feature Stiles (Oleanna, "Bourne Identity") in the title role under the direction of Bob McGrath. Performances will run Oct. 26-30 in the Harvey. According to BAM, "The mythology surrounding the Greek character of Persephone—the beautiful and doomed daughter of Zeus and Demeter who was abducted by Hades into the Underworld—is explored through songs, narrative, projections, and instrumental music, all performed in the style of a 19th-century theatrical production." Acclaimed nouveau cirque artists James Thiérrée will return to BAM with Raoul Nov. 5-14 in the Harvey. The Beckett-inspired piece "tells the story of an inhabitant of a shape-shifting structure under siege from a mysterious outsider who shares his face and form. The intricate set includes the collapsible abode and extraordinary life-sized fabric animals created by Thiérrée’s mother Victoria Chaplin."

Ping Chong will stage the Oregon Shakespeare Festival production of Throne of Blood, adapted from the Akira Kurosawa film, Nov. 10-13 in the Gilman. Inspired by the 1957 film, which resets Macbeth in feudal Japan, "Chong calls upon his interdisciplinary roots to re-imagine Kurasawa’s unsparing vision of mankind for our own troubled age," according to BAM. "The classically trained actors of the renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival bring the characters to life in a production that combines text, dance, video projections, cinematic sound, and elaborate costumes and scenery that evoke both medieval and modern times."

German Theater Company Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz will present the U.S. premiere of The Marriage of Maria Braun Nov. 17-20 in the Harvey. Thomas Ostermeier will helm the "stage adaptation of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s iconic 1979 film. Echoing Fassbinder’s confrontation of the founding myths of Germany, the production tells the story of Maria Braun, a woman who uses her sexuality and ingenuity to survive and eventually prosper in the aftermath of World War II."

London’s Lyric Hammersmith and the Vesturport Theatre from Reykjavik will unite for an adaptation of Franz Kafka's Metamorphoses, adapted by David Farr and Gísli Örn Gardarsson, Nov. 30-Dec. 4 in the Harvey. Gardarsson will also portray "Gregor Samsa, the man-turned-insect whose sudden transformation causes his parochial family to slowly turn on him. Börkur Jónsson’s dual-level set underscores the alienation visually, with the second tier, the domain to which Gregor is effectively banished, turned ninety degrees, providing a site for former gymnast Gardarsson’s most mesmerizing physical feats," BAM states.
