Tony Award-winning director Joe Mantello (Wicked, Other Desert Cities, The Normal Heart) directs the musical that is being produced by Tony Award winner Jeffrey Seller (Rent, In the Heights) and Sting's longtime manager Kathryn Schenker.
The Last Ship will have choreography by Steven Hoggett (Once, Peter and the Starcatcher, American Idiot).
Rehearsals are expected to begin in spring 2014 towards an out-of-town engagement June-July 2014. A Broadway arrival is expected in October of next year.
The musical has music and lyrics by Grammy winner Sting with a book by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Yorkey (Next to Normal, If/Then) and Tony winner Logan (Red, I'll Eat You Last).
The Last Ship incorporates biographical elements from Sting's life and uses his boyhood home, Newcastle, England, for its locale. It features an original score with a few pre-existing songs from Sting's catalogue, which are given new context in the narrative.
Sting's upcoming album of the same title features music from the production. Sting is also set to perform a ten-concert engagement at the Public Theater this fall. Tickets and further information on the benefit concerts are available by clicking here.
