News Susan Stroman Will Direct and Choreograph Bullets Over Broadway Musical On Broadway Producers Julian Schlossberg and Letty Aronson announced June 14 that five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman will direct and choreograph the world premiere of the new musical Bullets Over Broadway during the 2013-14 Broadway season.

The new musical adaptation of Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath’s screenplay of the 1994 crime-comedy film will feature an adaptation by Allen and will utilize existing music of the period from the Great American Songbook.

Additional creative team, dates, theatre and casting will be announced at a later time.

Bullets Over Broadway, according to press notes, "tells the story of an aspiring young playwright newly arrived on Broadway in 1920’s New York who is forced to cast a mobster's talentless girlfriend in his latest drama in order to get it produced."

The original film starred John Cusack as playwright David Shayne, Diane Wiest as actress Helen Sinclair, Chaz Palminteri as mobster Cheech and Jennifer Tilly as mob doll Olive Neal. Wiest earned an Academy Award for her performance. Allen's screenplay was Oscar-nominated.

Allen's numerous films include "Annie Hall," "Manhattan," "Crimes and Misdemeanors," "Husbands and Wives," "Love and Death," "Stardust Memories," "Crimes and Misdemeanors," "The Purple Rose of Cairo" and many more (about one a year since the 1970s). His plays include Don't Drink the Water (1966), Death Knocks (1968), Play It Again, Sam (1969), Death (1975), God (1975), The Query (1976), My Apology (1980), The Floating Light Bulb (1981), Death Defying Acts (1995), Writer's Block (2003), A Second Hand Memory (2004) and Relatively Speaking. Also on Stroman's theatrical plate: Choreographing and co-directing the new musical Prince of Broadway, with Harold Prince, for an announced bow of fall 2013, and directing and choreographing the Andrew Lippa-scored musical Big Fish (Broadway launch to be announced).

Stroman directed and choreographed the critically acclaimed musical The Scottsboro Boys, receiving Tony Award nominations for both direction and choreography. She directed and choreographed The Producers, winner of 12 Tony Awards including Best Direction and Best Choreography. She co-created, directed and choreographed the Tony Award-winning Best Musical  Contact for Lincoln Center Theater. Among her other Broadway credits are Crazy for You, Show Boat, Oklahoma!, Young Frankenstein, The Frogs, The Music Man, Thou Shalt Not, Steel Pier and Big. Off-Broadway credits include Happiness for Lincoln Center Theater, Flora the Red Menace and And the World Goes ‘Round. For ten years she choreographed Madison Square Garden's annual A Christmas Carol, directed by Mike Ockrent.
