Signature Theatre has announced a one-week extension for both of the Red Letter Plays, Suzan-Lori Parks’ contemporary riffs on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic novel The Scarlet Letter, now playing at the Off-Broadway theatre. Fucking A, which opened September 11, will now play through October 8; and In the Blood, which opens September 17, will now play through October 15.

In both plays, Pulitzer Prize winner Parks reimagines the character of Hester from The Scarlet Letter. In Fucking A, revered and reviled local abortionist Hester Smith formulates a plan to free her jailed son. In the Blood introduces us to Hester La Negrita, a penniless mother of five condemned by the men who love her.

Directed by Obie Award winner Jo Bonney, Fucking A began previews August 22 in The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre.

The cast is made up of J. Cameron Barnett (The Emperor Jones), Tony Award nominee Brandon Victor Dixon (Hamilton), Ben Horner (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), Theatre World Award winner Joaquina Kalukango (The Color Purple), Tony Award nominee Marc Kudisch (The Wayside Motor Inn), Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Christine Lahti (Chicago Hope), Ruibo Qian (Bull in a China Shop), Drama Desk Award nominee Elizabeth Stanley (On the Town), and Raphael Nash Thompson (Pericles).

Parks’ In the Blood, directed by Sarah Benson, began previews August 29 in The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre.

The cast is made up of Lortel Award nominee Jocelyn Bioh (Everybody), Michael Braun (Everybody), Obie Award winner Russell G. Jones (Father Comes Home From the Wars), Ana Reeder (When It’s You), Tony Award nominee and Drama Desk Award winner Saycon Sengbloh (Eclipsed), and Tony Award winner Frank Wood (Angels in America).
